PENTECOST XV
NIV TEXT
1ST READING
Isaiah 58:1-14
1 "Shout it aloud, do not hold back. Raise your voice
like a trumpet. Declare to my people their rebellion and to the house of Jacob
their sins. 2 For day after day they seek me out; they seem eager to know my
ways, as if they were a nation that does what is right and has not forsaken the
commands of its God. They ask me for just decisions
and seem eager for God to come near
them. 3 'Why have we fasted,' they say, and you have not seen it? Why have we
humbled ourselves, and you have not noticed?' "Yet on the day of your
fasting, you do as you please and exploit all your workers. 4 Your fasting ends
in quarreling and strife, and in striking each other with wicked fists. You
cannot fast as you do today and expect your voice to be heard on high. 5 Is
this the kind of fast I have chosen, only a day for a man to humble himself? Is
it only for bowing one's head like a reed and for lying on sackcloth and ashes?
Is that what you call a fast, a day acceptable to the Lord? 6 "Is not this
the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice and untie
the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every yoke? 7 Is it
not to share your food with the hungry and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter
— when you see the naked, to clothe him, and not to turn away from your own
flesh and blood? 8 Then your light will break forth like the dawn, and your
healing will quickly appear; then your righteousness will go before you, and
the glory of the Lord will be your rear guard. 9 Then you will call, and the
Lord will answer; you will cry for help, and he will say: Here am I. “If you do
away with the yoke of oppression, with the pointing finger and malicious talk,
10 and if you spend yourselves in behalf of the hungry and satisfy the needs of
the oppressed, then your light will rise in the darkness, and your night will
become like the noonday. 11 The Lord will guide you always; he will satisfy
your needs in a sun-scorched land and will strengthen your frame. You will be
like a well-watered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail. 12 Your
people will rebuild the ancient ruinsand will raise up
the age-old foundations; you will be called Repairer of Broken Walls, Restorer
of Streets with Dwellings. 13 "If you keep your feet from breaking the
Sabbath and from doing as you please on my holy day, if you call the Sabbath a
delight and the Lord's holy day honorable, and if you honor it by not going
your own way
and not doing as you please or
speaking idle words, 14 then you will find your joy in the Lord, and I will
cause you to ride on the heights of the land and to feast on the inheritance of
your father Jacob." The mouth of the Lord has spoken.
2ND READING
1 John 4:7-21 / Sermon Text: “Live
your thanks: Kindness – Love one another”
7 Dear friends, let us love one another,
for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God.
8 Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. 9 This is how
God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that
we might live through him. 10 This is love: not that we loved God, but that he
loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. 11 Dear
friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. 12 No one
has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is
made complete in us. 13 We know that we live in him and he
in us, because he has given us of his Spirit. 14 And we have seen and testify
that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world. 15 If anyone
acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God, God lives in him and he in God. 16 And so we know and rely on the love God has
for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in him. 17 In this way, love is made complete among us so that
we will have confidence on the day of judgment, because in this world we are
like him. 18 There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear,
because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect
in love. 19 We love because he first loved us. 20 If anyone says, "I love
God," yet hates his brother, he is a liar. For anyone who does not love
his brother, whom he has seen, cannot love God, whom he has not seen. 21 And he
has given us this command: Whoever loves God must also love his brother.
GOSPEL READING
Luke 10:25-37
25 On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test
Jesus. "Teacher," he asked, "what must I do to inherit eternal
life?" 26 "What is written in the Law?" he replied. "How do
you read it?" 27 He answered: "'Love the Lord your God with all your
heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind'; and, 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'"
28 "You have answered correctly," Jesus replied. "Do this and
you will live."
29 But he wanted to justify
himself, so he asked Jesus, "And who is my neighbor?" 30 In reply
Jesus said: "A man was going down from Jerusalem
to Jericho,
when he fell into the hands of robbers. They stripped him of his clothes, beat
him and went away, leaving him half dead. 31 A priest
happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man, he passed by
on the other side. 32 So too, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him,
passed by on the other side. 33 But a Samaritan, as he
traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him. 34
He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put
the man on his own donkey, took him to an inn and took care of him. 35 The next
day he took out two silver coins and gave them to the innkeeper. 'Look after
him,' he said, 'and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense
you may have.' 36 "Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the
man who fell into the hands of robbers?" 37 The expert in the law replied,
"The one who had mercy on him."Jesus told
him, "Go and do likewise."
